The US Lightship "Chesapeake" was stationed off the Chesapeake Bay entrance for 29 years. The US Coastguard cutter Taney is the only vessel still afloat that saw action at Pearl Harbour on 7th December 1941 when the Japanese made their attack on the US Naval Base. The Taney was launched in 1936 and was finally retired in 1986. The Seven Foot Knoll lighthouse was built in 1856 and was located for 133 years at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. The seven cast iron piles were screwed into the soft mud of the bay, thus eliminating the need for a masonry foundation. Not exactly a usual sight when the Captain of a submarine emerges on deck. The USS Torsk, launched in 1944, was the submarine that sunk the final Japanese ships at the end of WW2 in the Pacific. The Liberty Ship "Jeremiah O'Brian" - astonishing that these ships were built keel laying to launching in 60 days. The plan was to build these ships quicker than Germany's navy could sink them!
