Croatia Cruising 2007-2009
After
three
years
cruising
in
the
Western
Mediterranean
I
rounded
the
boot
of
Italy
and
headed
into
the
Adriatic
Sea
between
Italy
and
Croatia.
My
first
visits
were
to
coastal
ports
on
the
south
east
of
Italy,
but
soon
in
the
2007
summer
season
I
crossed
from
Brindisi
in
Italy
to
Hvar
in
Croatia.
At
that
time
Croatia
was
not
part
of
the
European
Union,
so
I
was
restricted
to
90
days
in
any
period
of
180
days,
which
the
Croatian
Port
Authorities
rigidly
enforced.
During
the
period
between
2007
and
2009
I
therefore
managed
three
90
day
periods,
criss
crossing
to
Venice
and
other
northern
Adriatic
Italian
ports from time to time, and finally to Greece.
Croatia
is
an
absolutely
fantastic
place
to
cruise,
both
amongst
the
many
islands
and
along
the
lengthy
coastline.
In
particular,
Dubrovnik,
Split,
Trogir,
Sibenik,
Pula,
Korcula
and
Zadar
are
very
memorable
places.
On
the
down
side,
Croatia
is
an
expensive
place
to
cruise
and
the
national
pastime
seems
to
be
extracting
as
much
money
from
foreign
tourists
and
cruising
yachtsmen
as
possible.
Unlike
most
other
Mediterranean
countries,
they
even
try
to
charge
for
anchoring,
and
sometimes
succeed
although
I
mostly
avoided
paying!
The
high
costs
of
cruising
Croatia
puts
many
foreign
yachtsmen
off,
and
rightly
so, as only a short distance away is an equally if not better cruising area, Greece.
